abc's of depression and mental illness

The stigma that surrounds mental illness unfortunately leaves a lot of people in the dark. Whether they are currently struggling, suspect a loved one is or have already been diagnosed the topic remains taboo and so silence is all that ensues.

Personally, I spent over 29 years struggling, trying to find answers as to why my brain worked the way it did. Once I was diagnosed with bipolar II, among other things, there was at least relief in having an answer. That being said, bipolar is a highly genetic disease and it's very likely that it lives within my genetic line. I thought to myself, "A little heads up from someone would have been great rather than having to figure it all out on my own." But society says that mental illness is a secret, it is not something to be talked about.

What if we did talk about it, though? It would have saved me a hell of a lot of trouble. Just by being open about it, especially with your loved ones could save your daughter or your nephew or your aunts life. It's time to start talking.
